MISS UMA DEVI graduated with an LL.B (Hons) from the University of Wolverhampton, United Kingdom in 1994. Upon the completion of her bachelor’s degree, she spent a few years working in the banking industry with Oriental Bank Berhad (now known as Hong Leong Bank Berhad) where she handled various tasks involving both legal and operational tasks. She also holds a Post Graduate Diploma in Arbitration.
Uma began her legal career as a litigator where she chambered with Messrs Azman Davidson & Co. After being admitted to practice as an Advocate and Solicitor of the High Court of Malaya in 2005, Uma began her legal career by practicing in various legal firms. Her vast expertise of 16 years spans many areas of law with a specialized focus on commercial and general civil disputes and Industrial Court matters.
Uma, then progresses and went on to practice for several years until she started her own practice at Uma Devi & Co, where she has appeared as counsel for many cases on employment and civil disputes. In addition to that, Uma has also obtained a Professional Diploma in International Arbitration.
Uma has appeared as counsel at all Court levels and represented private individuals, small and medium sized enterprises and corporate clients in a broad and diverse range of matter – from goods sold and delivered, disputes to general contractual and debt recovery matters, industrial court matter and labour court matters. She also advises local and foreign corporate clients on various contentious issues. As part of her practice, she also carries out some advisory and litigation work on company, family and employment matters.
In addition to managing her workload, Uma was also an Adjunct Tutor for Medical Law and Health Enhancement Programme (HEP).
Uma’s main role in MEF is to provide advisory and representation services to member companies on Industrial Relations and Labour Court related matters, mainly regarding dismissal cases, constructive dismissal, termination of fixed term contracts and many more.
